An interview with Kobe

An interview with:
Chung (Kobe) Cheung Cheung
Cert IV International student with The Academy of International Hairdressing
Why Hairdressing, why Australia?
I have been in Australia for 6 years. I completed my Bachelor Degree in Design and worked as an advertising designer with a local paper for 1 year. I soon realised that even though I love design and art, I couldn’t work with a computer all day long. Hairdressing fulfils my love of design and the arts and gives me the opportunity to meet people and socialise while building my career.
What inspires you?
Hairdressing inspires me; nothing can compare with the satisfaction I get from a successful haircut. Of course a mistake can make me upset for a few days. I never tire of cutting hair; it is frustrating if I don’t have clients whose hair I can cut, it is such a drag for me.
How did you feel entering the IHS Competition?
At first, I didn’t have any hope or expectations of winning, I just wanted to gain some experience and to see what my level of hairdressing was compared to my peers. I put a lot of effort into my entries, researching information on hairdressing competitions; watched DVD’s and asked for suggestions and advice from my lecturers and other professional hairdressers.
When I collected my first award for Graduating Class- Female cut and colour, I tried to avoid all the eyes watching me and got off the stage as fast as I could. However, when I won my second award for Graduating Class – Male cut and colour, I allowed myself to enjoy the feeling of collecting my award on stage.
Are you enjoying your time at The Academy of International Hairdressing?
Yes! All the lecturers are highly qualified, helpful and friendly. They focus on each student’s learning progress individually by recognising their weak areas and providing extra training to bring them up to standard, and, by also allowing more creative freedom on the student’s more advanced areas.
The classes are small and intensive, they are interactive and reactive. To deliver the knowledge of hairdressing is not just their job, but also their passion. I am very lucky to be here.
What are your hopes and ambitions for the next few years?
To be a professional stylist and form a creative design team with like-minded hairdressers, photographers, makeup artists and fashion designers. I would like to showcase my fashion views and develop higher skills.
Is there any one thing you would like to share that may inspire other hairdressers to follow their dreams?
Never be afraid to make a mistake, because we learn from our mistakes. Never be afraid to try new things, because that is the most enjoyable part of hairdressing.
